F1?What is F1?

Formula One (F1) is the highest class of single-seater open-wheel racing sanctioned by the FIA, widely regarded as the pinnacle of motorsport.

(FIA Formula One World Championship)。"Formula" refers to the set of technical rules (formula) that all competing cars must follow. These rules cover almost everything from engines, aerodynamics, tires, to car dimensions. Each year, F1 consists of multiple races collectively known as the FIA Formula One World Championship.

Why "Formula One"?

One" represents the highest class of racing; "Formula" refers to the unified technical specifications all cars must follow. There are also lower-tier formula series like F2 and F3, serving as stepping stones for young drivers to reach F1.

F1 History

F1's roots trace back to the European Grand Prix motor racing of the 1920s-1930s. Driver Career Path

Young drivers typically progress through Karting → F4 → F3 → F2 → F1. F1 also has a "Super Licence" points system, requiring drivers to accumulate enough points and mileage in lower series to qualify for F1.

Race Weekend Format

A modern F1 race weekend typically starts Thursday or Friday and ends with the Grand Prix on Sunday. The sprint race weekend format was introduced in 2021.

Regular Weekend

(FP1 / FP2)Friday: Two Free Practice sessions (FP1 / FP2)
Saturday: Third Practice (FP3) + Qualifying
Sunday: Grand Prix

Sunday: Grand Prix
Sprint race is shorter and also awards points

Qualifying Rules

Qualifying is split into three sessions (Q1 / Q2 / Q3), progressively eliminating the slowest drivers. Q3 determines the top 10 grid positions. Drivers who reach Q3 must start on the soft tires they set their fastest lap on. Grid penalties can be applied for any position outside the top 8 before Sunday.
